March is National Read Aloud Month, and Brent Elementary is joining the national campaign to get every child and every parent to read aloud together every day.

A few facts on the importance of reading and early learning:

  • Research shows that reading aloud is the single most important thing you can do to prepare your child for reading and learning.
  • The number of words a child knows entering kindergarten is a key predictor of his or her future success.
  • Some children will hear 30 million fewer words than their peers do by age 4.
  • A young child learns best through interaction with a caring adult.
  • Children quadruple the number of words they know between ages 1 and 2.
  • More than one in three entering kindergartners don't have the essential learning skills.
  • A child not reading at grade level by the end of first grade has an 88 percent chance of not reading at grade level by the end of fourth grade.
  • Reading aloud with your child builds builds vocabulary, comprehension, storytelling and phonetic skills.
