A bench-mark

Posted on: June 5, 2017

A bit of history returned to the Secondary Campus as alumni and current staff re-installed benches along the main walkway. For current students, they're an invitation to sit, reflect and connect with classmates and friends.

The benches were a gathering place and social hub from 1960 to 1999, when they were removed to facilitate bond-issue construction projects. While original redwood benches had deteriorated, the metal benches installed this weekend had previously been in use elsewhere on campus.

The benches topped the list when a group of alumni convened to help with campus-improvement projects. The benches were given in honor of 13 alumni classes: 1968, 1970, 1972, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1987.

Alumni who helped with the bench project were Fred Wittenbaum, Dawn Bundman, Mary Anne Layne, Walt Medlock, Craig Stephens Murphy, Craig Schlesinger, Bob Swartzel, Dianna Wergers, Matt Wergers and Mike Whitt. Staff members lending a hand were Michael Morgan, Matt Breines and Cathy Counts. (See photo at top of page.)

"Everybody hung out on the benches. It's a definite heartstrings-pull to return them -- it brings back fond memories for people," says Fred Wittenbaum. "They give students today the ability to be outdoors in the spring and fall, and it makes the entrance to the campus feel more warm and welcoming."

Thank you to everyone involved in reviving happy memories and connecting our students to their school's rich past!
