A Heart for Giving

Taylor McCollum, 7, was recognized at a Board of Education meeting.

At age 5, Taylor McCollum saw a need at her school -- kids who didn't have backpacks or school supplies. Now she's donated more than $700 of her own birthday money to help. http://local.cincinnati.com/share/story/256984

Taylor, now 7, was recognized with a special citation at the Nov. 20 Finneytown Board of Education meeting. Superintendent Terri Noe presented her with a certificate and said the second grader was a model of generosity for everyone.

Taylor and her family invite friends, neighbors, teachers and relatives to Taylor's birthday party in July. Taylor asks that no gifts be given to her but invites her guests to give to a fund to buy school materials for other students. Taylor also donates her outgrown clothing to her school.

Taylor's parents, Nikkie and Jeff McCollum are proud of their young daughter's generosity, and of its effect on others. "It makes us feel wonderful because our other children look up to her," her mom says. "Now her little sister Annabelle, who's five, is giving her birthday money to help pay for other students' school accounts."

Superintendent Noe praised Taylor for making a difference in her community. "I am in awe of a child who, at such a young age, is thinking of giving back instead of getting," she said.
