Amazing! Whitaker Writers Club Publishes Book

Posted on: May 19, 2016

How many elementary students do you know who are published authors? Nineteen -- and they're all members of the Whitaker Writers Club! Hot off the press: Do Not Open: A Pick-Your-Path Adventure.

As the name suggests, the Writers Club's first novel has multiple story lines and multiple endings. A reader can choose which plot he or she would like to follow, then turn to a specified page to read that "path" of the story.

The book is a true collaborative effort. Stephanie Haarlammert, who leads the after-school club offered through the PTA, wrote the introduction and had the students develop the setting and characters. Then, via Google.docs, the students wrote sections of the story and edited each other's work.

"It was exciting to make all the paths in the book -- all the different endings," said fourth-grader Jared Baugh.

"I liked how, if you can't think of anything, you can just end -- like a cliff hanger -- and someone else can write the end of the story," said fifth-grader Nikki Cox.

The story lines are, in turn, clever, funny and fanciful, with George Washington turning up at one point as well as Sonic the Hedgehog. There is a town made entirely of candy and dramatic moments, such as the protagonists being "smushed in the wreakage, never to be heard from again."
