Helen Murphy: "I have a job that makes me smile every day."

Posted on: May 12, 2016

Helen Murphy has served Finneytown Local Schools in a host of roles, from crossing guard to bus aide to part of the district's custodial crew. Her enthusiasm and dedication have made her a favorite of staff and students at Brent Elementary -- and May's Support Staff Member of the Month for the district.

Before coming to Finneytown, Helen worked for Procter & Gamble, U.S. Playing Cards and Burns International. She worked at P&G during the 1980s when disposable diapers hit the market, and remembers cutting and assembling diapers by hand. Later, she evaluated new P&G cleaning products when she worked for Burns International.

Helen eventually accepted a position on the night custodial crew at Cottonwood Elementary School, where she also served as a crossing guard. Later she worked as a bus aide and night custodian at Whitaker Elementary and the Secondary Campus. She has been a custodian at Brent for the last 10 years. "Our elementary students are a joy in my heart," she says. "It's fun to see the children become parents in our district."

Helen's children, Derwin and Antwonna, are Finneytown graduates. Derwin is a special-education assistant for the district and Antwonna works for 3CDC(Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation).

The Ohio Education Association recently chose Helen as one of southwest Ohio's Education Support Professionals representatives at the National Education Association's Support Professionals Conference in Orlanda, Fla.

Finneytown appreciates Helen's service, dedication and smiles.
