"It's a great opportunity to teach patriotism to our students."

Posted on: September 12, 2016

Finneytown elementary schools invited Springfield Township firefighters to lunch to commemorate 9/11 and to say thank you for keeping their community safe every day.

The idea came from Gerry Levy, director of nutrition for Milford, Madeira, Wyoming and Finneytown school districts. She calls it Hero Day and sees it as "a great opportunity to teach patriotism to our students."

The firefighters get lunch. The students get red plastic firefighter hats. Both groups get the chance to share a conversation.

"I hope they had an opportunity to really connect," Ms. Levy says. "It's a chance for our students to know the firefighters provide service and keep them safe."
