Finneytown High School Marching Band Wins Grand Champion in First Contest

In the first contest of the year, Finneytown High School Marching Band won Grand Champion in September competition. This is the first time since 2011 Finneytown has done this! They beat six other bands with college grade-level six music, which is the highest level music performed. Additionally they won “Best Music” for “Over Niagara Falls” by Michael Dougherty and “Engulfed Cathedral” by Claude Debussy; Best Visual for the props, uniforms and flags; and Best Percussion. Band director Michael Kennedy says, “These students find value in the work, they continue to improve because they do their personal best at every rehearsal. The leadership within the marching band is what makes this group improve every year.”

Of the 89 students who participate in marching band, 45 are also athletic competitors participating in Finneytown fall sports. Notably, in many districts, students may only participate in one extracurricular activity.  Marching band students have spent countless hours coordinating, training, and preparing in addition to practicing with their sports teams and staying current with their academics.

In addition to the Superior I rating that Finneytown Marching Band received, they qualified for State Championships which will occur in late October or early November.
