PTA Educator of the Year: Doug Dirr

Posted on: February 4, 2016

For 19 years Doug Dirr has taught, encouraged, inspired and empowered Finneytown students. His dedication and passion have not gone unnoticed. He's just been named the Finneytown PTA Educator of the Year.

A letter nominating Mr. Dirr says it best: "With Mr. Dirr's guidance, our young students are getting valuable opportunities to learn how to become compassionate leaders."

Compassion and respect are the qualities Mr. Dirr promotes -- and models -- in his class and in the student-service projects he oversees. Under his guidance Whitaker students hold socials to raise money for holiday gifts for local families with needs, make blankets for children in area hospitals, help with a cookout to provide Honor Flight funds for veterans and contribute to a wide range of good causes. Students learn to serve. They also learn to lead. Student Council members are encouraged to plan their own socials and, with the money they raise, to do the shopping for the families in need.

It's no surprise that large numbers of students vie for Student Council positions or flock to volunteer opportunities. Mr. Dirr has a gift for making service and scholarship seem important -- and also fun.
