Support Staff Member of the Month: Mike Fairman

Posted on: March 21, 2017

For the past 14 years, Mike Fairman has played a host of supportive roles at the Secondary Campus, earning him the gratitude of staff members and the distinction of March Support Staff of the Month.

For 14 years, Mike Fairman has taken on whatever duties have been asked of him on the Secondary Campus -- building substitute, educational assistant in special education and in the CATS, Credit Recovery, PAWS and Spanish online programs. This year Mike is in charge of study hall.

Mike says his goal is being there to help and support students, a modest statement that sums up the essential mission of any school system.

A Hamilton High School graduate, Mike first studied accounting at Miami University but changed his major to secondary education and later continued his studies in Spanish, including traveling to Spain.

Outside of work, Mike likes traveling and playing card games. Mike is an important part of the secondary staff and remembers the support his friends and co-workers showed him when he lost both of his parents within the same year. "I have always thought of Finneytown as a second family," he says.

Mike Fairman was born and raised in Hamilton, Ohio. After graduating from Hamilton High School, he attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Mike began as an accounting major but changed his major to Secondary Education. In high school, he had found Spanish to be one of his favorite subjects, enjoyed his Spanish teachers, and went on a trip to Spain. Later, at Miami, Mike would continue his studies in Spanish.

Mike began his career with Finneytown Schools fourteen years ago as a long-term sub for Spanish in grades 6-8. He then became the building sub for the Secondary Campus. After serving as the building sub, he was offered a full time position as Ed. Assistant in the Special Education Department. Through the years, Mike has served as Ed. Assistant in the ED Unit, the CATS Online Program for High School students, the Credit Recovery Online program for Seniors, the PAWS Online program for Sophomores, and last year helped facilitate and assist students using the online Spanish program. Currently Mike is in charge of Study Hall.

Some of Mike’s favorite hobbies are playing card games, especially poker. His favorite game to play is Texas Hold’em. Mike currently plays in several home leagues. In 2015 he won a trip to Las Vegas to play in the World Series of Poker. Mike also enjoys traveling.

Mike had two wonderful parents growing up who were originally from Pennsylvania and one older brother. He shared that a memorable moment for him was the school year that he lost both of his parents. “I was moved by how many of the staff took the time to come out to their visitations and show their support in my time of grief. I have always thought of Finneytown as second family.”

Mike would like to be known for “being there to help students learn and understand and achieve their educational goals.”
