About Us

With 1,463 students, the Finneytown Local School District is large enough to offer rich opportunities in academics, fine arts and extracurriculars and small enough to have the feel of an extended family. It is comprised of three schools: Brent Elementary, grades K-2; Whitaker Elementary, grades 3-6; and Finneytown Secondary Campus, grades 7-12.

A point of pride is that the district offers students and staff the chance to learn and work in schools with an even racial balance, which has held steady over the last five years.

 The district has a 91% four-year graduation rate, 96% attendance rate and 15% mobility rate. Per-pupil spending is $10,527. The community has the third-highest voted millage in Hamilton County, an indication of the confidence residents place in the fiscal management of the district.

Numbers, however, tell only part of the Finneytown story. Inclusion is a thread that runs through the school district. Students with special needs not only receive speech, language, physical and occupational therapy, they’re elected homecoming queen, are cheerleaders and have major roles in arts performances. On World Culture Day, the district celebrates students who come from 15 different homelands.

The high school is small enough to offer students multiple opportunities for leadership and involvement – it’s not unusual to see a football player spend half-time playing in the marching band, for example – but ambitious enough to offer 15 Advanced Placement courses in which 42 percent of high school students are enrolled. Students can sign up for art glass, Rock and Roll Academy, media and design and digital electronics.

In the 1980s, Finneytown was a trailblazer in service learning and the district on which many other schools modeled their programs. The importance of service is still in the district’s DNA, from elementary students who pay for Honor Flights for military veterans to WildcatSERVE, the PTA outreach that devotes roughly $7,000 annually to food, clothing and support for up to 40 families.

And the quest for higher achievement goes on. The district added all-day kindergarten in 2016-17, is increasing the rigor of its middle-school curriculum, and will offer more than 50 opportunities for professional development this year.
