Building Learning, Community and a Garden

Posted on: May 26, 2016 12:00 am
Community gardens are sprouting across the U.S., and Finneytown Secondary School is part of the trend, with a gorgeous garden that's fostering learning, friendships and community.
April showers bring May flowers....and fruits and vegetables too! On May 14, a group of determined 7th graders, lead by their teacher Mr. Volz, took their creativity and design to the dirt behind Finneytown High School. With the help of volunteers from Crossroads church, Finneytown staff and students, and Finneytown community members, the school's community garden was slowly transformed into an "outdoor" learning classroom. Volunteers constructed a shed, a composting system, and multiple raised community garden plots (both vegetable and herb), and a designated area for an "outdoor classroom." Future plans include adding a butterfly garden, chicken coop, and rain barrels to the area. Finneytown Secondary Staff and students are excited to utilize this "outdoor learning center" next school year! They also want to extend their extreme gratitude to volunteers from Crossroads church (through their GO Cincinnati outreach) and from the local community. Thank you for your hard work and support!
