Students Brendon West and Michael Rothwell receive Good Samaritan Award from Springfield Township Fire Chief Robert Leininger

When Finneytown High School students Brendon West and Michael Rothwell came upon a student hurt in an accident, they did the right thing -- stayed by him and then shared information with first responders. Springfield Township Fire Chief Robert Leininger said that kind of compassion isn't so common any more.

At the Nov. 20 Board of Education meeting, Chief Leininger presented Brendon and Michael with Good Samaritan citations on behalf of the Springfield Township Fire Department.

"The main thing I wanted to recognize them for was being willing to be involved," the chief said. "A lot of times we arrive on scene, and we ask, 'Did anybody see anything?' and nobody wants to be involved. Nobody asked these young men to do what they did. They initiated it, and that took a lot of courage. They were good Samaritans, and you don't see that much any more."
