Doug Dirr Named Ohio PTA Educator of the Year

Posted on: May 2, 2017

Whitaker fourth-grade teacher Doug Dirr's impressive run of awards started last spring, as Finneytown PTA's Educator of the Year. Then Mr. Dirr went on to county, regional and statewide honors.

Last fall, Mr. Dirr was named the Hamilton County PTA's Outstanding Council Educator. Last week, he was named the Ohio PTA District 6 Outstanding Educator. Then on Sunday, at a statewide PTA recognition ceremony in Columbus, he was named the Ohio PTA's 2017 Outstanding Educator of the Year -- the state organization's highest honor.

"Mr. Dirr is dedicated to providing our students with a variety of extracurricular activities that build a sense of community," said Whitaker Principal Lisa Tenbarge. "These opportunities allow students to develop positive character traits and to contribute to the community. His recognition is well deserved."

Competing for the Ohio PTA award are teachers nominated by the state's 500 PTA units. Award criteria include educational leadership, involvement in student activities, membership in and support for the PTA.

In his role as advisor to Student Council and the Community Service Club, Mr. Dirr organizes projects that raise funds for worthy projects and shape the culture of the school. Last fall’s Celebrating Our Veterans Project raised $1,300 for Honor Flights for a group of veterans. Proceeds from a fall social go to the PTA for holiday baskets for local families in need. For the Linus Project, students, staff and parents make blankets for children in local hospitals, and last year’s Math-A-Thon raised money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Mr. Dirr is a 20-year veteran Finneytown teacher.
