Whitaker Elementary teacher Doug Dirr is known for making his fourth-grade classroom a place where students feel comfortable and learn by doing, and for overseeing a host of student service projects.

On Sept. 28, those accomplishments led to Mr. Dirr being named the Hamilton County PTA’s 2016 Outstanding Council Educator.

In his role as advisor to Student Council and the Community Service Club, Mr. Dirr organizes projects that raise funds for worthy projects and shape the culture of the school. Last year’s Celebrating Our Veterans Project raised $1,300 for Honor Flights for a group of veterans. Proceeds from a fall social go to the PTA for holiday baskets for local families in need. For the Linus Project, students, staff and parents make blankets for children in local hospitals, and last year’s Math-A-Thon raised money for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

“Doug is a really kind and caring person who creates so many unique offerings for our school,” said Whitaker Principal Lisa Tenbarge. “He gives the kids a lot of leadership opportunities and service opportunities. He’s really educating the whole person.”
The 20-year veteran teacher was named the Educator of the Year by the Finneytown PTA in 2015.
