Military veterans being honored at Whitaker Veterans Day celebration

It was a day of saying thank you for a contribution too great to repay. Whitaker Elementary's annual HONORing Our Veterans cookout and celebration on Nov. 5 recognized 13 local military members whose combined service spanned more than 60 years. The event raised $700+ to send military veterans on Honor Flights.

The celebration included free meals for veterans, musical presentations from Whitaker students, games and flag sales, and an opportunity for the veterans to share the time and location of their service and for students and community members to personally thank the veterans for their service. It was a special honor to have a veteran from World War II at the ceremony.

The HONORing Our Veterans celebration has raised enough funds to send 17 local veterans on Honor Flights, which are free flights to Washington D.C. to see their war memorials.
